In einem Text aus dem klassischen Athen ist das Zitat weder so noch so ähnlich gefunden worden, wie zum Beispiel auch Bernard Suzanne in seinem informativen Blog "Plato dialogues" bestätigt.
Der hochdekorierte Fünfsternegeneral Douglas MacArthur war einer der Ersten, oder der Erste, der diesen Aphorismus George Santayanas im Jahr 1962 bei seiner in Amerika berühmten Abschiedsrede in West Point dem griechischen Philosophen Platon unterschob (Link).
Vielleicht wurde das Zitat aber erstmals im Londoner "Imperial War Museums" irrtümlich Plato zugeschrieben (Link), und General Douglas MacArthur hat das Pseudo-Platon-Zitat von dort übernommen.
Santayana, 1922:
- "Yet the poor fellows think they are safe! They think that the war - perhaps the last of all - is over! / Only the dead are safe; only the dead have seen the end of war."
